Doubts Over Signings

An article in yesterday's Greenock Telegraph has raised doubts over Morton's intentions in the transfer market.

In the article, headlined 'Irons says no immediate plans for signings', Roger Graham tells us:

  1. Morton are not on the verge of signing anyone - Davie Irons said: “We are not on the verge of signing anyone. We are considering all our options.”
  2. There are concerns over the wage budget - Davie Irons said: “There is only so much of a budget and we have to be careful of the numbers we bring in, if anyone at all. We don’t want to burden the club.”
  3. In addition to point 2. Irons also indicated that we may have to move out Jamie Stevenson, Kieran McAnespie or David MacGregor before we sign players.
  4. Former Clyde striker Gary Arbuckle is training with the club.
  5. Former Morecambe striker Jon Newby (pictured) is not training with the club but has been linked with us - Davie Irons said: “No, he’s [Newby] not been here. He has been brought to my attention, but we need to find out a bit more about him.”
  6. We will be signing a second goalkeeper but Irons would not reveal if this meant Kevin Cuthbert or Lee Robinson.
Irons did not categorically state that we would not be signing anyone and he may be keeping his cards close to his chest. The tone of the article seems to suggest - to me anyway - that Irons was quite evasive and this gives me cause for concern especially with the talk of the wage budget burdening the club. We can only wait and see I suppose.
