They Were Trialists

Yesterday I asked whether Alan Reid (pictured) and Kevin Cuthbert had been signed or played as trialists - the answer was that they were trialists.

In today's Greenock Telegraph Roger Graham confirms that both players were trialists and that Davie Irons is working to sign them permanently.

It is expected that Cuthbert will sign in the next couple of days but a deal for Alan Reid looks as if it could be more complicated. Irons said: “Hopefully we will sign him [Cuthbert] tomorrow. There are a few wee bits and pieces to sort out regarding a contract, but I’m hopeful we will do the business.

“There’s still a bit to go on that one [a deal for Reid] yet. It’s not as clear cut as we thought at one stage.”

Trialists Or Signings?

I think it was a surprise for everyone in the travelling support at Braodwood on Saturday when Kevin Cuthbert (pictured*, left) - who we'd been linked with throughout the summer - and Alan Reid were listed as substitutes. Also of note was the fact that they were mentioned by name rather than as 'trialists'.

Rumours are suggesting that they technically played as trialists but were named because they are both expected to sign contracts in the next few days.

Cuthbert's appearance signals the end of Davie Irons interest in Lee Robinson.

Clyde 1 Morton 1

Clyde 1 - Brown (90+4)
Morton 1 - Newby (40)

Att: 1638

We wuz robbed! Clyde - aided and abetted by referee Chris Boyle - stole an undeserved point with a goal in the fourth minute of injury time.

Irons surprised everyone (well me anyway) when he started with the same 3-4-3 formation he went with against St. Mirren. Stewart Greacen, Alex Walker and Brian Wake were deemed fit enough to start after injury worries earlier in the week. Stevie Masterton was the man who made way for Greacen.

We took the lead in the fortieth minute. Iain Russell cut in from the right wing and put Jon Newby one-on-one with David Hutton with a clever through ball. Newby's first effort was easily saved by Hutton but the rebound came back to the ex-Liverpool youngster and he made no mistake slotting home from a tight angle to score his first goal for the club on his debut.

Morton created numerous goalscoring opportunities through the course of the game - some of which they will really regret failing to take. Iain Russell missed a few good chances in particular. In the first half he headed a Finlayson cross straight into Hutton's arms. In the second half he looked certain to score when he raced through on goal from the left hand side of the pitch but with only the keeper to beat he scuffed his shot and it trickled weakly by the post. He crashed a shot off the outside junction of bar and post with a similar chance from the opposite side.

Russell's chances weren't the only ones. In the second half we came close when Peter Weatherson smashed a free-kick towards the top corner but Hutton was equal to it and pushed it round the post for a corner. Jim McAlister twisted and turned on the left and drove a cross cum shot across the face of goal and Wake lunged at it unfortunately for us he was inches from a connection and another chance slid away.

Not only did we look like we could create chances but we never looked like conceding. We were sold from back to front. The strikers worked their balls off up front. Paartalu broke everything up in midfield, Greacen was colossal in defence and Colin Stewart was solid in goal. But that all changed four minutes from time when Brian Wake was sent off for a clumsy challenge on Neil McGregor. From there on in we were put under severe pressure as we sat back and tried to hold on for the three points. Our efforts were admirable but it couldn't go on indefinitely and referee Chris Boyle seemed determined to play until we eventually cracked. Four scandalous minutes into injury time Willie McLaren flighted over a corner Colin Stewart came for it but was caught under the ball in no man's land and Mark Brown headed down into the ground and up into the roof of the net to score. Colin Stewart decision to try and collect by going through a packed group of players certainly played it's part but you can't help but be infuriated by the amount of injury time Boyle decided to play - there was no way four minutes was merited.

In spite of the result there was much to be encouraged by. We are a well organised, hard working side who will be hard to break down and even harder to bully in tight matches. So I can't see many teams beating us this season but what I do worry about (only slightly though) are where the goals are going to come from. The strikers work so hard but I can't see any of them scoring a lot of goals. If one of the three we have does go through a prolific goalscoring spell I think we could have a better season than anyone expected.

Clyde manager, John Brown, summed the match up for me. He said: "Davie will feel hard done by with the equaliser coming in injury time. But we didn't deserve anything."

Memory Match

FINEFARE Scottish Premier League - 09.04.88

Morton 3 - Collins, Turner, Alexander
Rangers 2 - Durrant, Ferguson

Season 1987/88 was a disappointing one for everyone associated with Greenock Morton. Morton were relegated from the FINEFARE Scottish Premier League after finishing rock bottom with only 16 points. Twenty years on and we have not been back in the top division.

The one bright spot came on the 9th of April 1988 when Morton beat Glasgow giants Rangers 3-2 at Cappielow - one of only three league wins that season.

Morton lined up as follows:

1. David Wylie
2. Alex O'Hara
3. Jim Rogers
4. Jim Hunter
5. Martin Doak
6. John McMaster
7. Tommy Turner
8. Derek Collins
9. Rowan Alexander
10. Alan Bateman
11. Archie McGeachy

Subs Used:

12. Jim Arthur
14. Brian Robinson

The defeated Rangers team was:

1. Chris Woods
2. Scott Nisbet
3. Jan Bartram
4. Graham Roberts
5. Ray Wilkins
6. John Brown
7. Ian Ferguson
8. James Phillips
9. Ally McCoist
10. Iain Durrant
11. Mark Walters

Subs Used:

12. John McGregor
14. Ian McCall

In the Ten Years Ago section of the 'Looking Back' feature in the Morton v St. Mirren matchday programme (11.04.98) it says:

Morton 3 Rangers 2 was the shock score in the Premier Division. We were going down but in the words of Dylan Thomas we would 'not go gently into that goodnight'. Derek Collins might smile as he reads this piece for he scored a cracker that day as Morton won a five goal thriller. The other Morton goals came from Tommy Turner (who is now with St. Mirren) and Rowan Alexander who played for the Saints before Morton.

In Graeme Ross' Morton Greats the chapter on Derek Collins mentions the match:

One high spot of the season was a rare victory over Graeme Souness's Rangers at Cappielow. It was Morton's first league victory over Rangers at Cappielow for almost 70 years. Derek scored his first goal for the club, after a foray into nose bleed territory ended with a 35-yard swerving cross shot that eluded 'Gers 'keeper Chris Woods. The goal set Morton on their way, and sent Souness searching for his tea cups.

I decided to write an article on this match after a recent visit to my Uncle in Inverness who gave me the matchday programme and ticket because I was quite impressed he was at this match - Morton's only league win over Rangers at Cappielow in the last 90 years - if the information above is correct.

The programme (pictured, above left)for the match cost 50p. It includes 'From the Manager's Desk' with Jackie McNamara (Allan McGraw was in hospital), a player profile of Alex O'Hara, 'Visitors' Spotlight' by Danny McCahon and Reserve Review with George Anderson.

A match ticket (pictured, below) for an adult to stand on the terracing cost £2.50.

Morton look set to start Saturday's league opener at Clyde with a makeshift defence.

Stewart Greacen will be the only defender with a chance of taking part in Saturday's league opener at Clyde on Saturday. Last season's Captain - who has only played 78 minutes of action this pre-season, all of which came as an early substiute against St. Mirren in the Renfrewshire Cup final - is even rated as doubtful by the Greenock Telegraph's David Christie.

Alex Walker played in both the Renfrewshire Cup semi-final and final but is short of match fitness. David MacGregor and Allan McManus are still out. Ryan Harding will miss the first month of the season after an operation on minor muscle injury and inflammation of the pubic bone.

These injuries mean that Morton will probably go with a back three of:

Weatherson Greacen McGuffie

However, I have a feeling Irons mught risk Alex Walker and play him ahead of McGuffie. In addition there is a chance that former Rangers defender Chris Smith could be signed and put straight into the team.

East Stirling Away In The Challenge Cup

Morton will play East Stirlingshire in the 2nd round of the Alba Challenge Cup. The match will be played at Stenhousemuir's Ochilview on either Tuesday 12th or Wednesday 13th August 2008.

This tie will see us face familiar faces in Jim McInally, Martin Clark and John Hillcoat. Brian Graham - who is on loan at the Shire - could face us depending on the terms of his loan deal.

The full draw is as follows:

Alloa Athletic v Clyde
Livingston v Forfar Athletic
Raith Rovers v Ross County
East Stirlingshire v Greenock Morton
Dunfermline Athletic v Queen of the South
East Fife v Airdrie Utd
Partick Thistle v Peterhead
Cowdenbeath v Albion Rovers

Robinson Deal Depends On McGregor's Fitness

Davie Irons appears to be getting slightly frustrated by the length of time it is taking to get Lee Robinson (pictured) back in on loan.

Morton must wait until after tonight's Champions League qualifier between Rangers and Kaunas to see if Allan McGregor comes through without getting injured.

Davie Irons told the Greenock Telegraph's David Christie that he will bring someone else in if the loan deal is not sorted by Thursday at the latest: "It is a case of wait and see if Allan McGregor is fit, then everything should be okay, from his point of view and ours. But if it isn’t sorted out by Thursday morning at the very latest then I will have to go and get another goalkeeper quickly."

Christie also tells us that Irons will not be making a move for trialist Jeff Forsyth.

Morton Are A Better Club Than Airdrie

We all knew it already but Morton trialist Chris Smith (pictured) has confirmed it - Morton are a better club than Airdrie United.

An article in yesterday's Greenock Telegraph reveals that former Rangers youth Chris 'Junior' Smith is desperate to join the Ton and will do so when paperwork is completed in the next few days.

Smith mentioned a trial he had with Airdrie before coming to Morton: "I had a brief trial with Airdrie too but I've basically been here since we started pre-season.

"I'd much prefer to come here as it's a better club and I've really enjoyed my time so far."
