According to Riddle's biography Ritchie was appointed Morton assistant manager by John Wilson about 1986. However, Allan McGraw - who was manager at the time - didn't know anything about it and insisted Jackie McNamara was given the job. Ritchie was paid by Wilson for six months and even had a company car but did very little. According to Ritchie McGraw told him: "You are a threat to me. If I lose three games in a row the crowd will be shouting for you."

In March 2005 he was voted Morton's all-time cult hero by viewers of the BBC's Football Focus.
