Owen comes from a footballing family. His father, also Owen, played for St. Mirren in the 1950's and made one appearance for Morton in season 1960/61. His his younger brother, Paul, played for the Paisley side in the 1990's, while his son, Mark, is currently on the books at Motherwell.
