Miscellaneous: Cowan is Morton's most capped player. In each of his 25 games for Scotland he always wore his Morton shirt under his Scotland shirt. In 1949 he performed so heroically against England at Wembley that the 3-1 win came to be known as 'Cowan's game'. His next match was for Morton against Hibs at Easter Road. The whole stadium and the Hibs team - including their legendary 'Famous Five' strikeforce - stood and clapped him off the pitch at the end.

He has chapters dedicated to him in Vincent Gillen's Greenock Morton 1874-1999 and Graeme Ross' Morton Greats.

In March 2005 he finished third in a poll to decide Morton's all-time cult hero by viewers of the BBC's Football Focus.

These stats are taken from Graeme Ross' Morton Greats. Neil Brown's online database has it as 141 games - I think Brown's site only lists statistics for league matches.
