Miscellaneous: John holds dual Australian and Italian passports - his parents moved from Italy to Australia.
He began his football career at the prestigious Australian Institute of Sport.
In his time with Italian Serie A side Atalanta Maisano represented his country at international level. He was part of the Australia under 17 squad that took part in the under 17 World Championships in Ecuador in 1995 and started in all three Australia matches and the Australia under 20 squad that took part in the under 20 World Championships in Nigeria in 1999. Harry Kewell, Brett Emerton, Vince Grella (Torino), Marco Bresciano(Palermo), Danny Invincible are high profile players who were John's team mates in the under 17 and under 20 tournaments. He played against Robbie Keane, Damien Duff, Rafael Marquez (Barcelona), Mista (Atletico Madrid), Julio Cesar (Inter Milan), Juan (AS Roma), Fabio Aurelio (Liverpool) in the same tournaments.
John was considered 'too good' for the third division when he signed for Morton in 2002. He decided to sign because his brother Marco was already at the club.
Like Marco, John scored in his final game for the club. He came on as a substitute and scored a double against Berwick Rangers in the final match of 2004/05. Some fans moaned about his second goal because he refused to lay on a tap in for fans' favourite Warren Hawke - who was also playing his last game.
