While at Sunderland - his boyhood heroes - he played in two of their biggest matches in the early 1990's. He started the second leg of the 1989/90 2nd division play-offs against bitter rivals Newcastle (Sunderland won 2-0 and were promoted) and he came on as substitute at half-time in the 1992 FA Cup final (Sunderland lost 2-0 to Liverpool) .
