Morton In Talks With Jon Newby

Morton are in talks with former Morecambe striker Jon Newby according to the Evening Times Ronnie Cully.

Name: Jon Newby
Age: 29 (28.11.1978)
Position: Centre Forward
Nationality: English
Height: 6' 0"
Former Clubs: Liverpool, Carlisle United [loan], Crewe Alexandra [loan], Sheffield United [loan], Bury [loan], Bury, Huddersfield Town, York City [loan], Bury, Kidderminster Harriers [loan], Wrexham, Southport, Morecambe

Newby was first linked with the club about a month ago in the Lancaster And Morecambe Citizen. Nothing more was mentioned until Tuesday's Greenock Telegraph printed an article in which Irons was quoted as saying Newby hadn't been training with the club but that he had been 'brought to his attention'.

Today's Evening Times article says that talks between the club and player stepped up last night and Irons is quoted as saying: "With his experience, including his time at Liverpool, he can be a real asset to us."

Jon began his career with Liverpool where he won the FA Youth Cup in 1996. Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and David Thompson were fellow team mates in that cup winning team. He was most recently at Morecambe where he scored 10 goals in all competitions in 2007/08 - his only season with the club. Suprisingly he was released at the end of last season. Newby scored against us in Morecambe's 3-0 win in a pre-season friendly in July 2007.
